An absolute standout new novel and my favourite Jane Harper to date!

Set in a remote Australian cattle station, this is a story of death, family tensions, generational change and old secrets which quietly fester, but the real character of this story, is the harsh unforgiving Australian landscape.

Harper's talent is to make you feel the sun on the back of your neck and taste the red dirt as you turn the page. Compelling! Anne

INSTORE EVENT

Nick banner

Don't miss out on meeting Nic and get his new book signed in store on Thursday 2nd November at 10am.

'THE THINGS THAT MAKE US'

The revealing and insightful autobiography of an AFL superstar.

From number one pick in the 2000 AFL draft, to six-time winner of St Kilda's best and fairest award, to five-time All Australian, to captaining his club for a record 220 games, to more than 330 games as a star of the AFL, Nick Riewoldt is an out-and-out champion.

He's also a man whose intelligence and insight allow him a deeply fascinating perspective on his life and career. The Things that Make Us is Nick's auto...biography, and it's as powerful, interesting and compelling as the author himself. As Nick describes it:

'I never wanted to write a 'cookie-cutter' footballer's book-chronologically moving from the under 8s through to the big time, full of hard-ball gets, wins and losses, triumphs and disappointments. I chose the title, The Things that Make Us, because it made it easy to explore things we can all relate to, no matter what path our lives have taken.'

I hope there's something in these pages for everyone who's known grief, especially anyone who's lost a sibling. I hope, too, that my story brings a deeper understanding of a footballer's crazy world. An insight into what goes into making it, what it takes to stay there, and the crippling anxiety that can consume you when your burden is to accept only the best. I hope it paints a picture of what it's like to be the focus of acclamation and scandal, the good and bad of a searing spotlight, and how these experiences can bring out the best and worst in us.

I hope it honours my family-the German and Tasmanian sides with their stories of struggle and endurance who somehow came together, who are the essence of the book's title. I hope it gives thanks for the love I found on the other side of the world, and the beautiful next generation Cath and I are building together.

I hope above all that it honours my sister Maddie.

These are the things that made me.'

Book Review of the Week

'The Twentieth Man' by Tony Jones

Tony Jones inspiration for his first novel was a series of events that occurred in Australia in 1972. With a plot that moves from Australia to Yugoslavia and back again, Jones has penned an utterly convincing and compelling thriller full of intriguing characters.

A great read, I look forward to reading Tony Jones's next book. Tim.

Book Review of the Week

'The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks' by Rebecca Skloot

The true story of Henrietta Lacks, a poor Southern tobacco farmer whose cells become the first 'immortal' human cells grown in culture and were vital in developing the polio vaccine, cancer research, IVF and many other medical advances.

A great blend of the personal story, with the science and medical advances made as a result of the amazing 'Hela' cell.

Now made into a major motion picture featuring Oprah Winfrey. I really enjoyed this book. Anne.
